This oversized plush puppy has a soft coat and glossy, pleading eyes, just like a real dog. Get ready to start interpreting three different barks and a whole range of movements that are playful and affectionate. Getting to Know Your Puppy
Nine sensors allow Biscuit to respond when you pet him or issue a voice command. Kids will enjoy the contented sounds he makes when they pet his back and the discovery that if they hold a hand on his back he will lay down, if he is sitting, or sit up, if he is already laying down. Sensors in his nose and mouth prompt him to sniff when his nose is petted or chomp on his treat. Touch his left paw, and he will raise it to shake. A unique photo sensor in Biscuit's forehead prompts him to flinch, blink, or sneeze when you wave something in front of him.

Take a peek at the back of the bone-shaped tag on his collar to see all the commands he knows. You can ask him to "sit," "lie down," or "speak." He even knows how to shake and will nod or move his paws in excitement when you ask, "Do you want a treat?" Like any voice recognition technology, Biscuit can be tricked by background noise or speech that is unclear. You may want to help younger children practice speaking the commands loudly, clearly, and distinctly, so they are not disappointed by his confusion.

Tips on Playing with Elmo! Live
Elmo makes lots of fun movements and gestures -- the only slight drawback is that his movements generate a somewhat loud, mechanical sound that sometimes interferes with being able to understand what Elmo is saying. He also has to be on a hard, flat surface -- otherwise he has a tendency to fall over. This in itself has a fun effect, however. When he falls over, Elmo asks you to help him back up again, and when he's put back upright, he'll say "thank you." Also, since his nose has to be squeezed with a bit of force to activate him, our two-year-old tester sometimes needed assistance with it.

Elmo Live! comes with 6 AA batteries. A Phillips screwdriver is required to replace them.

Great Candle Making Video For Pillar Candles!
This video covers the making of pillar candles. Some people would consider pillars to be one of the easiest types of candles to make, but those of us with some experience know that these can be very challenging to get perfect. If you are new to making candles, you might want to consider starting with Introduction to Candle Making DVD

The video covers several different types of waxes and specialty candles; including "chunk" and the very neat "splash" candle (they come out different every time).

I must say that I really do love making candles and have learned a lot from watching the videos produced by Gatehouse Candles. If you have read any of my other reviews, you know that I think Marie Kauffman is a fantastic teacher (with over 40 years in the business she should be!).

"From Novie To Expert", Seriously!
"From Novice To Expert", Seriously
I really loved this video! You can tell that Marie Kauffman loves working with Gel candles. This is the 5th video from Gatehouse Candles that I have seen, and while they have all been very good, this one is just outstanding. The video takes you from the most basic type of Gel candle through fairly involved candles that use other type of waxes as well. One lesson builds on the next, giving the needed experience to tackle the more complicated candles. The advice on working with embeds and how to use "scrap" wax was worth the cost alone. I just love the Maple Pecan Sundae and Ice Tea Set Projects, but I think the Strawberry Pie and Fruit Preserve candles will sell better for me.

A VERY FUN Video! They Look So YUMMY!
I love bakery candles and that is one of the reasons I started to make candles to begin with. These candles are always my best sellers at shows and people love to get them as gifts.

I should say that I have met one of the people in this video (Noreen Hill)! Noreen and Marie Kauffman work together on this video to teach a lot of different bakery style candles, including muffins, preserves, sundaes, pies, etc. It is fun to hear them chat and joke with each other.

Great and Easy To Follow
I love the pictures and the easy to follow projects, I recommend this book if you would like to make your own gel candles.

Author Corrects Oct. 27 Review
I am the author of this book. I am compelled to respond to the negative review written October 27.

Of course the reviewer has a right to her opinion, however it is incorrect that I recommend people "set an untabbed wick in gel". In my introduction, on page 4, I state "The wick must be self-tabbed with a metal holder". In my general discussion of materials required, on page 21, I state "the wick must have a metal T-Tab at its base which is at least 7/16" high". Finally, in my detailed discussion of wicks on page 22, I explain at great length why a tabbed wick is so essential (it would be a fire hazard to not use one).

I do not believe that the reviewer has read my book very carefully because her statement about wicks, as well as her other statements, do not reflect the content of the book.

This book starts out with defining different materials,waxes, molds,coloring/scenting,and wicks. It tells you how to prepare the wick;how to level the bottom of the candle;and how to use containers found in all homes. It has sections on beeswax candles,making tapers at home,making your own molds,painting and applique candles, layering candles, making floating flowers by hand, imbedding, gel candles(small section),making stacked candles,hurricane(shell)candles,stencilling, wrapped candle ideas,stick candles for the yard,marbling candles,and frosted candles. This book includes templates, variations and tips in the sections and all pages are either full colored pictures or have multiple pictures. Many of the crafts are even explained with pictures to show the novice how to make candles. I have bought around 30 books on candles and I still like this very much. It shows you how to make candles from nothing but the wax and your hands. I can't say enough about this book...

The Weakest of Books, Better Available
The Weakest of Books, Better Available

Being a professional candle maker (3rd generation) and an avid reader, I have a huge collection of candle and soap making books. After looking over "Making Candles & Soaps for Dummies" for perhaps the 3rd time, I can honestly say that there are many better books covering both subjects. This book covers only the very basic information and will leave you with more questions than answers.

For the candle side, I highly recommend Beginner's Guide to Candlemaking or the instructional video Introduction To Candle Making

On the soap side, try Smart Soapmaking: The Simple Guide to Making Traditional Handmade Soap Quickl Safely, and Reliably, or How to Make Luxurious Handcrafted Soaps for Family, Friends, and Yourself.

These are both great hobbies that can become good sideline business and there are good resources available on the subject... this book is not one of them.

Not as helpful as others in the "Dummies" series
I usually love the "Dummies" books and was hoping this one could teach me about soapmaking. It really didn't have much in the way of helpful information and I ended it returning it.

Great for melt and pour soap creations
I did not read the sections on candle making, so this review is strictly based on the soap sections. I found this book to be one of the most helpful ones I've read (I checked out a lot from the library). True, it does not cover the cold process, but as the more simple, melt and pour method is all that I'm interested in, this book is right on target for my needs.

In addition to the color and fragrance info, it discusses stenciled soap, soap on a rope, variegated soap, embedded soap, three-dimensional soap, imprinted soap, soap balls, customized shampoo, massage oil, bath salts liquid soap and more.

I also enjoyed Chapter 19 which is devoted entirely to aromatherapy. It lets you know what a particular scent is noted for (i.e. boosting memory, fighting infections, relieving congestion, calming effect, etc.), as well as whether it is photosensitizing (increases your chance for a sunburn), a possible irritant to sensitive skin, possesses antibacterial qualities, etc.

Not a good choice....even for beginners
I bought the book with just a little knowledge of the candle making industry. The problem with the book is its not updated for the new technology and materials that are used in candle making today. Yes it does a good job of breaking down the VERY BASICS but thats it. You need to know more about the industry than this book covers. I got more information from watching videos on youtube and the different candle supply companies websites than the couple of books I recently purchased. Watch videos and get up to date information on new waxes and materials. Save yourself the $15 or whatever you may spend and research the internet and the big candle supply companies out there. They know whats new and what works

When they say basic, they mean basic.
This is a great book if you've never read anything about candlemaking previously. I didn't realize it was going to be so 'simple'. It's extremely basic and I found it almost childlike. It's very easy to understand, has good pictures, and would be great if you are a real beginner.

Excellent for true beginners
I started candle making several months ago. I wish I had had this book on Day 1. I pretty much figured out the basics on my own, but would have saved a lot of time (and mistakes) if I had had this book to start with. It's Candle Making 101: basic, simple, step by step, and lots of photos. A great book if you are just starting out.

I really loved this video! You can tell that Marie Kauffman loves working with Gel candles. This is the 5th video from Gatehouse Candles that I have seen (although not all of them are for sale here at Amazon), and while they have all been very good, this one is just outstanding. The video takes you from the most basic type of Gel candle through fairly involved candles that use other type of waxes as well. One lesson builds on the next, giving the needed experience to tackle the more complicated candles. The advice on working with embeds and how to use "scrap" wax was worth the cost alone. I just love the Maple Pecan Sundae and Ice Tea Set Projects, but I think the Strawberry Pie and Fruit Preserve candles will sell better for me.

Making candles can seem intimidating, but this video teaches you everything you need to know. These candles make great gifts. My friends and kids' teachers love getting them!

Everything I Needed To Know About Making Candles
I received this video as a gift last year and was impressed with the amount of information and the clear instructions provided. I guess this to be expected as the presenter has 40 years experience and is a teacher at one of the larger candle supply companies. I have seen quite a few "how to" videos from other companies and most are just awful (one of them didn't even show candles being poured) or were just trying trying to sell you their kits (or both). This video covered a lot of different waxes, wicks, molds, etc and showed the actual process from start to finish. Here are the Pros and Cons:

Pros:
* A lot of information presented in a clear and understandable format
* Covers Soy, Gel, Paraffin, and Blended waxes
* Covered Container, Votive, and Pillar candles
* Provided a lot of tips and tricks that will save time and money

Cons:
* The beginning was a little dry with a lot of information

There are actually quite a few different videos (Projects, Gel, Wedding Candles, etc) produced by this company that I did not see for sale here and I hope they are added soon. They are all very good (I have most of them) and have even given a few of these as gifts to friends who wanted to learn candle making.

How To Easily Make Floating Candles

Since wax floats on water, floating candles are simply made with ordinary paraffin wax. The shape of the candle is important, because it needs to be wider than it is tall in order to float successfully and not capsize. Most craft stores will carry of variety of molds, some even have multiple molds that will allow you to make several small candles at a time.

To make small floating candles, you will need: Mold Primed wick 8 oz. paraffin wax 2 T Stearin Water bath (optional) Craft knife or sharp blade Pan lined with foil

Steps to Making Floating Candles.

1. Prime your wick by dipping it into melted wax several times. This is to prevent the wick from absorbing water when the candles are floating. Then, cut the primed wick into equal lengths, long enough for each candle, plus a little extra which will be used to tuck under and secure the wick to the mold.

2. Insert a wick through the wick hole in each mold, then fold the end of the wick over against the bottom of the mold and seal the wick firmly to the mold with mold seal. (If the mold you have chosen doesn't have a wick hole, you will need to make one in the bottom of each mold. This is usually only necessary if you have purchased a plastic mold.)

3. Heat the wax to 180^F. Add the Stearin and any color you desire. After the wax has melted, fill each mold to the top. It's possible your wicks may fall to one side, but they can be straightened later.

4. Now it's time to let the molds cool. Either set them aside and wait for them to cool down or place them in a water bath. However, if you choose to use a water bath to speed up the setting process, be careful that the mold does not tip and your paraffin ends up in the water bath. I personally don't believe it making it any harder than it needs to be, so I just let them sit right where they are until they have cooled down.

5. When the surface is beginning to be set, but still soft, pull each wick upright. If you do this while the candle wax is still soft, it will give the wax a chance to settle and you'll end up with a smoother result.

6. Let the candles completely cool. Since the floating candles are small, there should be minimal sinking and you should not need to top them off. After they are set, remove the mold seal from the bottom of the mold. Straighten the wicks underneath and the candles will drop out of the mold easily.

7.With a sharp knife or craft blade, cut the underneath wick flush with the candle base.

8.Heat a pan lined with foil, press the base of each candle down onto the foil. This will melt the base slightly and seal the end of the wick. This is important, if your wick isn't properly sealed, your candle will take on water and won't burn.

With your candles finished, all you have to do is design your centerpiece. You might want to add flowers in a complimentary or contrasting color to the bowl. Sometimes I put large clear marbles in the bottom of the bowl, it just seems to give the centerpiece more depth. The marbles are visible but don't detract from the candles and daisies floating on top. Since floating candles tend to float low in the bowl, their flames are reflected up the glass bowl making a really pretty centerpiece.

How To Easily Make Gel Candles

If you are just starting to learn about candle making, making a gel candle is really the easiest way to start. There are just a few things you need to consider first, such as what kind of container you want to use, whether you want to add color to your gel, and how to to prevent bubbles from forming in your candle.

You purchase gel in a solid state, mostly. The trickiest part may be getting the gel out of the container you bought it in. However, once you remove the first few crumbs, the rest of the gel usually comes out rather easily, although it's usually in one large piece.

Prepare Your Containers:

Wash and dry your containers well before using. Soap residue, oils and glue from stickers can all interact with your gel and cause unpleasant side effects. You can use almost any glass container for a candle. I've done some really interesting candles with glass I've picked up at the dollar store.

Melting the gel.

It's very important you pay attention to the gel as it begins to melt because the gel can reach its flash point (the point at which it bursts into flames) very rapidly and sometimes unexpectedly. It's important to check the manufacturer's instructions to verify the flash point of the gel you have purchased. I always use a thermometer to gauge the temperature of the gel. You just have to be careful the thermometer isn't touching the side of the pan. Under no circumstances should you try to melt the gel in a microwave, it doesn't work and it's dangerous. Be careful when waiting for the gel is melt, because an accident splash while stirring, could result in a serious burn.

Adding Color:

After the gel has completely melted you can add your choice of color. If you are using solid dye, a small grater can be a big help in adding the dye. A good way to check the color is to place a spoonful of the tinted gel on a sheet of heavy white paper. As the gel on the paper cools, check to see if the color is what you wanted. If the color appears too dark, simply dilute it by melting more clear gel in your pan. If the color is too light, simply add a little more dye.

Choosing the Right Wick.

The length of the wick, of course, is determined by the height of the candle container. You can find a great selection of wicks at any craft store. For gel candles, you shouldn't use paper wicks. Wax-coated wicks are stiff and easier to handle. Tabbed wicks are good because they provide you with an easy way to anchor the wick in the bottom of the candle container. This is probably the easiest wick to use.

Positioning the Wick.

If you don't care if there are a few bubbles in your candle, you can hot-glue a tabbed wick to the bottom of the container. Then just pour the melted gel around the wick. The gel will react with the glue and this will cause some bubbling in your candle. Since most of the candles I make now are for my personal use and enjoyment (I love scented candles), this is the method I use. And, since the bubbles reflect the candles glow, this is not a problem for me.

However, if you are making candles to sell or for gift-giving and don't want bubbles, you can pour the gel first and then while it is cooling, but still soft, position the wick. To do this, first you will need to dip the wick in some melted gel and let it cool. Gently run your fingers down the wick to remove only the excess gel. Roll the top of the wick around a pencil or wooden dowel and position it over the container and position the wick in the center of the candle. When the candle has cooled and set up, cut the wick to no longer than 1/4 inch.

Finished Product

Now wasn't that easy. Gel candles are not only easy to make their colors are vibrant and you can match just about any color scheme in your home.
